Benzylpenicillin shows a marked bacteriocidal action against most commonly occuring
Gram (+) positive cocci, bacilli and anaerobes, and also against some Gram
(-) negative germs (e.g. Actinobacillus, Haemphilus, Leptospiren, some
Pasteurella strains, anaerobes such as Fusobacterium and Bacteroides.)
By use of the procaine salt of penicillin G, a high initial penicillin blood level is achieved. The more slowly absorbed benzathine salt provides a prolonged therapeutical blood level for 72 hours.
DHS is an aminoglycoside antibiotic predominantly active against Gram (-)
negative cocci and bacilli, and also against some Gram (+) positive bacteria (e.g.
Staph, aures, Mycobacterium).
The combination of DHS and penicillin provides a bacterial synergistic action with a broad spectrum.

Prevention and treatment of infections caused by penicillin G and/or DHS susceptible microorganisms such as respiratory tract infections (shipping fever, bronchopneumonias, upper respiratory tract infections), uro-genital tract infections (e.g. pyelonephitis by Corynebacterium
renale, endometritis), infections of skin and wounds, streptococci infections in horses (strangles, Str. zooepidemicus infections in foals), erisypelas in pigs, panaritium, necrobacillosis in calves and piglets, anaerobe infections (clostridial infections, tetanus, anthrax), polyarthritis (navel ill), mastitis, septicemias, bacterial infections secondar to viral ones.
The drug also can be used in postoperative prevention of infections.

Side Effects, Contra-indications/Warnings:
Allergic reactions may occur in animals hypersensitive towards penicillines, cephalosporines and aminoglycosides (antidote: corticosteroids and/or anthistaminica).
Procaine may seldom cause abortion in sows and nervous reactions in pigs.
Massive doses of dihydrostreptomycin may cause neuromuscular block particularly after accidental I.V. or intraperitoneal injection.
Anesthetics and muscle relaxants potentiate these effects.
Prolonged administration of high dose may lead to deafness, vestiblotoxic (ataxia, incoordination, nystagmus) and nephrotoxic signs.
Contra-indications: known hypersensitivity, renal insufficiency.
